Rudolf Steiner in the preface to the 1st edition in 1884:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Our age can only want to draw truth from the depths of the human being. (...) A truth that comes to us from outside always bears the stamp of uncertainty. Only what appears to each of us as truth in his own inner being can we believe in. Only truth can bring us security in the development of our individual powers. Those who are tormented by doubts have their powers paralysed. In a world that is mysterious to him, he cannot find a goal for his work. We no longer want to merely believe; we want to know. Faith demands recognition of truths that we do not fully understand. But what we do not quite see through is repugnant to the individual, which wants to live through everything with its deepest inner being. Only that knowledge satisfies us which does not submit to any external norm, but springs from the inner life of the personality.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n
